Vaginal discomfort is unfortunately a part of the menopause for some ladies and particularly for those who are in surgical menopause following a hysterectomy.
All of the products here are hormone free and are suitable for use also post pregnancy or in any conditions where vaginal dryness is an issue.
Tip: Especially when recovering from surgery, when using creams or inserting pessaries use surgical gloves so as to prevent any infection that could come via your hands.
We’d love to hear what you found works best for you but in the meantime we are featuring our top 5 products here.
1. Balance Activ Menopause – Moisture Pessaries Plus
These are really good and regular use restored the feeling to pre menopause days.
The pessaries are really easy to use and have the advantage that you can place them a little further in than when using a gel or cream. The recommended use is one every night for about a week until balance is restored and then a few times weekly and that did work exactly as specified. The only downside is that they are expensive for regular use.
Recommended use is one a day until symptoms are gone and then three times a week (or less) as required
Contain: Hyaluronic Acid, a substance that naturally occurs in the body where it acts as a cushion and lubricant in joints and other tissues. Also sweet almond oil for soothing relief from vaginal dryness, atrophy and discomfort. Sweet almond oil also helps wound healing in the vagina.
The pessaries are proven to be clinically safe and are hormone and paraben free.
As Balance Activ is exclusive to Boots in the UK and Ireland we don’t know what a comparable product is in the US and other countries so please let us know if you know if this is sold under another name in your area.
This is a tube of gel with applicator. It also contains a derivative of Hyaluronic Acid – HYDEAL-D.
Contains: They claim that Hydeal-D: “guarantees perfect adhesion to vaginal mucosa, has a prolonged hydrating action and favours the natural healing of micro lesions caused by friction.”
We see no reason to disagree with this as Hyalofemme produces very good results also. The advantage of the gel is that sometimes you only need a little top up so you can choose the amount needed yourself rather than working with a fixed pessary amount.
Recommended use is three times a week for first month and then as needed.
4. Multi-Gyn Liquigel
This is less user friendly than the other two listed, but if the vaginal balance feels a little off, as if you were developing thrush, this one seems to have an ability to stop it developing and restore normal flora.
Contains: 2Qr-complex. They describe this as a natural substance derived from medicinal plants and consisting of bio-active polysaccharides. They also say that it can neutralise harmful microorganisms.Well we can definitely back that up!
This product is water soluble so is also suitable for use as a lubricant and for post surgery or post childbirth recovery.
It can sting a little in some people for a few minutes after application. Overall we like this one as a back up for healthy vaginal flora.
5. Multi-Gyn Feminine Wash
This is a foam wash that is used in the shower for the sensitive vaginal area.
It’s a really nice product, easy to use and eliminates the reactions that can be caused by strong shower gels and body washes.
Again very suitable post surgery or post childbirth when the vaginal area is extra sensitive.
We like that by using this for the vaginal area, you can use your favourite soaps and shower gels on the rest of you and not worry about triggering any nasty reactions.
Products we didn’t like….
Sorry to say that we did not like this at all.
There’s nothing wrong with its application and action but it leaves a horrible visible residue that can fool you into thinking that you have some weird infection going on.
Would not use this again.
